For a normal home network, your router doesn’t need to answer requests from the Internet. By turning off the acknowledgment of data packets that try to probe a network, you prevent an attacker from determining that there’s a router at your IP address. So the attacker is less likely to try to break in than if she’s sure that a router is there and that it has open ports that may provide a way in.

Check Your Defenses

Now it’s time to check your defenses by using the ShieldsUP!! tool on the Gibson Research Corporation website. Follow these steps:

1. Choose Start | Internet to open a window of Internet Explorer or your default web browser.

2. Click the Address box to select its contents.

3. Type the address www.grc.com and press ENTER. The home page of the Gibson Research Corporation website appears.

4. Click the ShieldsUP!! link

5. Scroll down to the Hot Spots area and then click the ShieldsUP!! link to display the ShieldsUP!! page (see Figure 5-5).
